Speed limit sign along a road.

A pair of roadways on the city’s East Mesa have been identified as two of the worst for speeding in Las Cruces, and motorists should not be surprised when police step up traffic enforcement operations in those areas.

According to metrics reviewed by the Las Cruces Police Department’s Traffic Section, a stretch of Highway 70 and a portion of Red Hawk Golf Road are two of the most prolific areas for speeding in Las Cruces.

The stretch of Highway 70 that’s deemed one of the worst for speeding is between Roadrunner Parkway and Rinconada Boulevard. The section of Red Hawk Golf Road is between Central Avenue and Arroyo Road.

The speed limit on Highway 70, between Roadrunner and Rinconada, is 55 miles per hour, but data shows that 85 percent of drivers travel at least 71 MPH, or 16 MPH above the posted speed limit.

On Red Hawk Golf Road, where the speed limit is 30 MPH, 85 percent of drivers travel at 45 MPH, or 15 MPH above the limit.

Traffic engineers typically use the 85th percentile to set speed limits.

Motorists who travel along Highway 70 and Red Hawk Golf Road should not be surprised when LCPD officers increase their traffic enforcement operations within the next few weeks.
