October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the Las Cruces Police Department is encouraging users of information technology to remain vigilant and up to date on the best practices for online and digital safety.
According to the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, “Cybersecurity is more than an IT issue – it’s a public safety and economic security priority.”
Being cybersecure should be a priority for businesses, governmental entities and all individuals who use online platforms and IT devices.
Understand that cyber criminals may use sophisticated technology or unassuming methods to gain access to your electronic devices that contain a plethora of information such as banking and investment information, personal identifiable data and material you may not necessarily want others to see.
LCPD offers these tips to help keep you, your family and your business cybersecure:
- Stay informed about current threats and best practices
- Keep personal devices updated with the latest security measures
- Use strong and unique passwords for all your logins
- Use a two-factor authentication when possible
- Refrain from sharing passwords and electronic devices with other users
- Be cautious of phishing attempts: suspicious emails, direct messages or telephone calls from unknown individuals or marketers that request personal information or encourage you to click on their link
- Scrutinize URLs within emails and social platforms before clicking on them
- Avoid providing personal or financial information on websites that do not have a secure https connection
Ensure that children and older adults – particularly those who are relatively new to using technology – understand how to remain cybersecure
