Luther Lewis Gilbert

Las Cruces police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate the suspicious death of a 63-year-old man found Thursday afternoon near a bus stop on east Lohman Avenue.

About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2025, Las Cruces police and fire responded to several 911 calls regarding a man lying face down near a bus stop on east Lohman Avenue, between Nacho Drive and Foothills Road, near the ramp to the Las Cruces Dam recreation area. Officers and emergency medical personnel found the man with visible injuries to his face and experiencing agonal breathing, a medical condition often associated with severe distress or the final stages of life.

First responders attempted lifesaving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased has been identified as Luther Lewis Gilbert, 63, of Las Cruces.

Detectives with the Las Cruces Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Gilbert’s death and are asking the public for help. Police are asking to speak with anyone who may have seen Gilbert on Thursday, witnesses who saw Gilbert at or near the bus stop before the medical emergency occurred, or anyone who may have known or recently interacted with Gilbert.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Las Cruces Police Department at (575) 526-0795 or the Criminal Investigations Division at (575) 528-4222.
