Las Cruces Public Libraries invite you to attend the English as a Second Language Film Club presentation of “In the Heights,” from 1-3:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.

This is the first meeting of the ESL Film Club.

“In the Heights” is based on the Broadway play written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

To aid in pronunciation, the film will periodically be paused to read as a group a scene that was on screen.

“In the Heights” is a vibrant film that celebrates the diverse Latinx community of Washington Heights in New York City. The story revolves around a variety of characters living in this neighborhood, each sharing their life stories and dreams through catchy musical numbers that blend pulsating Latin rhythms with energetic dance routines. The film captures the spirit of community, resilience, and hope, making it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates heartfelt storytelling and captivating music.

“In the Heights” is directed by Jon M. Chu and stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz, Ariana Greenblatt, Leslie Grace. The movie is rated PG-13.

Studies show English as Second Language students showed a seventeen percent improvement in comprehension through the use of subtitles. To aid our ESL community, the library is hosting the ESL Film Club to view Latinx authored plays that were made into films in the English language, with Spanish subtitles.
