Police Lights on top of car

Las Cruces Police Department identified and arrested David Alan Leonard, 32, for shoplifting after a video posted to social media showed a theft at a local retail store.

With the assistance of Retail Asset Protection partners, the Community Outreach Unit of LCPD identified Leonard as the masked individual responsible for the series of thefts.

The investigation, which spanned several months, revealed that the shoplifter would enter retail stores multiple times a day while concealing his face with a mask. Investigators will continue collaborating with retail businesses to identify each incident and pursue charges based on the aggregate value of the stolen goods.

A felony arrest warrant was issued for Leonard for shoplifting over $500 from Rack Room Shoes. Leonard was located and arrested without incident.

It is believed that the shoplifter is working with a local organized retail theft group, so the investigation will remain open.  If your business may have been affected by this shoplifter, please contact LCPD at (575) 526-0795.

The video posted to social media can been seen on the LCPD Facebook page.
