Title: The Climb
Artist: Sophia Silva
Future Bus Shelter Location: Telshor Blvd. and Summit Court (Pending installation)
Description: This piece captures a roadrunner running up a pecan tree branch, surrounded by other pecan trees filled with pecan nuts ready to eat. I was inspired to do a roadrunner because they symbolize speed and agility, perfect for the theme “Animals on the Go!” The other reason why I included a roadrunner is because I consider them a symbol of good fortune which is captured by the brown pecan nuts that are ready to be harvested. This piece was made digitally as I have grown confident in this medium and the software. For the coloring of the roadrunner, I stayed with basic colors of a roadrunner which include brown and white, but I decided to add orange and turquoise. These are colors associated with Native American culture. I have always loved and respected Native American art and wanted to include it in this piece.
Artist Statement: My name is Sophia Silva. I am a digital artist who has lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico for as long as I have lived. I have done digital illustrations and practiced 3D animation. Despite working with digital art, I still try to stick to traditional art like drawing, sketching, painting, and doing arts and crafts. My creative style focuses mostly on character-driven worldbuilding, visual storytelling, realistic illustrations, and concept art.
I have improved my art thanks to the help of my teachers and to the encouragement from my family. By doing 3D animation, it has helped me better understand movement, lighting, and storytelling which I practice in all my pieces.
Art Stop Bus Shelter Public Art Exhibit was created by the City Art Board for the purpose of making art more accessible to community members and enhancing the everyday experience of our public spaces.
