Morning Ascent

Artwork of Quails in the desert and a table with a chair with a mountain in the background.

Title: Morning Ascent

Artist: Janice Ammons

Future Bus Shelter Location: Del Rey and Engler (Pending installation)

Description: From the quiet terrace, a Gambel’s quail lifts into the morning air—its motion bridging the stillness of the chair and table with the rising landscape beyond. Color fields of ochre, violet, and deep blue shape the light and shadow, echoing the rhythm of dawn in the Southwest. In Las Cruces, so many desert paths begin just steps from home, leading toward sunlit mountains and the quiet promise of connection with the wild.

Artist Statement: Janice L. Ammons is an artist based in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Working in oil, watercolor, painted-paper collage, and printmaking, she explores color, shape, and the essence of place in a planar, structural language. Her work reflects an ongoing conversation between perception and abstraction—where light, form, and rhythm define space as much as subject.

Ammons holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and is a former professor who taught at New Mexico State University, Quinnipiac University, and Yale University before turning to art full time. She has exhibited in juried shows including the New Mexico Watercolor Society’s ABQ Spring Exhibition, Gallery 925’s printmaking exhibition, and the Masterworks of New Mexico Exhibition. In 2025, she received the People’s Choice Award from the New Mexico Watercolor Society.

Art Stop Bus Shelter Public Art Exhibit was created by the City Art Board for the purpose of making art more accessible to community members and enhancing the everyday experience of our public spaces.
