Title: Javelinas in Motion
Artist: Alma Philips
Future Bus Shelter Location: Rinconada Blvd @ Walmart (Pending installation)
Description: In this project I used digital art for both the textured brushes to create bright and vibrant colors. This piece is quite different in subject matter than my usual work, but I had so much fun portraying the New Mexican desert and my favorite wild animals, javelinas. I incorporated the iconic New Mexican color palette of turquoise, orange, yellows, and the bright blue sky to spotlight the true beauty of where we all live. I also used the Fibonacci spiral to incorporate both the movement of the featured animals and to encourage the eye to also move around the piece. I truly had a blast creating this work and I hope that passion and love of New Mexico ring true in this artwork.
Artist Statement: My body of work utilizes oil painting, mixed media, and digital art to explore themes such as the exploration of self and how both our physical forms and consciousness intermingle within our universe. Some of my favorite works feature human figures, for the human body is complex and beautiful. I have always had a deep fascination with the emotions and feelings that humans can experience. The contrasting concept that human life is beautiful and sacred, yet life experiences and trauma drastically affect the quality of life is intriguing to capture within projects. I do not have a strict medium that I prefer, for the medium works to accentuate the meaning, so I am willing to explore my limits as an artist to portray my message successfully.
