Title: Finding Friends in Transit

Artist: Cynthia Mendoza

Future Bus Shelter Location: Memorial Medical Center @ Telshor (Pending installation)

Artist Statement: I am currently a substitute teacher for LCPS and occasionally do small projects on the side. I am a NMSU Alumni with a Bachelor’s in Applied Studies for Creative Media (animation, graphic design, film, and more). I like doing both digital and traditional media and mainly focus on animals or fictional characters.

Description: This is a digital piece that was done on an iPad using an app called Sketchbook. Based on the prompt, “animals on the go”, my first obvious thought was a roadrunner. Then that led to me remembering our Roadrunner Transit Buses that go around town so I had the roles switched. The roadrunner driving the Human Transit Bus. I wanted to have a friend to keep our roadrunner company so I was inspired to add a character who is a reference to a local in our city, a sulcata tortoise who is driving their wooden cart-like vehicle back home with some sweet pea flowers as cargo. It wouldn’t be Cruces without our lovely Organ Mountains in the background to bring it all together. I’m not someone who does a lot of background or point perspectives so this project was a fun challenge.

Art Stop Bus Shelter Public Art Exhibit was created by the City Art Board for the purpose of making art more accessible to community members and enhancing the everyday experience of our public spaces.
