The mission of the City of Las Cruces Animal Control is to ensure the well-being of both animals and residents of our community by delivering professional high quality, responsive and cost-effective animal control services.

Our mission is accomplished by enforcing animal control laws while providing compassionate services to animals and their owners.
Enforcing Ordinances
Animal Control Officers enforce such ordinances as:
- Care and Maintenance
- Nuisance (Barking)
- Rabies Vaccinations
- All other Ordinances can be found under Chapter 7 of the Municipal Code
Reaching Out to the Public
Animal Control also reaches out to the public by providing presentations to schools, clubs or any organization to better educate residents about proper and responsible pet care. These presentations include:
- Bite Prevention
- How to Correct Nuisance or Problem Dogs
- How to Recognize Animal Cruelty and Animal Hoarding
- How to Properly Care and Maintain Your Pet and a Variety of Other Classes Which Are Geared for Age-Appropriate Levels
Online Reporting
Residents of Las Cruces can now file loud animal reports online instead of having to call Central Dispatch or speak with an officer.

The shelter for your pet requires 3 sides, a roof, and an elevated floor. The shelter should also be weather resistant. Keep in mind the pet inside will be cold during the winter and hot during the summer. Also, a shelter does not replace the requirement for a separate shade.
Chaining your dog should be a last resort. But if you must, your dog can only be chained to a fixed object for up to one hour per 12-hour period, whether on a trolly system or not. Keep in mind that the dog should be able to access food, water, shade and shelter as well. Please keep in mind, daytime temperatures in Las Cruces can change quickly. Please do your part to help keep our best friends comfortable, safe, hydrated and well-nourished throughout the day.
A good question. The answer is maybe. A multi-animal site permit is required if you have 4 to 7 dogs, cats, rabbits or any combination of these. If you not sure, please contact us at 575-528-4100.
